I know this is a bit late in coming, but I haven't perused this board in a while.

To the best of my knowledge, the Kirkbride clan originated in the Cumberland or Cumbria region of England on the Scottish border, which for many many many years was a war zone; basically, sometimes it was England, sometimes it was Scotland...or something along those lines. It was definitely border territory, which would account for the dual-sounding heritage.
