I've also entertained the notion that the name Ervin/Erwin/Irwin/etc might be a surname used as a 1st name for males in the Kirksey family, & that Mary had such a name, but don't see any such families around to support that theory.
But in S.C., they were nearly hell-bent to use surnames as 1st names, so much so that I look at every male name with that notion in mind. They even used names like my McKinney as a 1st name there!
