I'm digging a little more into the Kizer line of McNairy county. Not finding a ton of new info, but I thought I'd share what I've learned (especially since I know it relates to you, and am hoping that it will lead to something that can help me connect our lines).

I had found some info that is in this thread somewhere about William F. Kiser's parents are James and Mary Ann's son. Well, interestingly enough....I'm pretty certain Mary Ann connects to the other side of my family. If you're interested, I'd be happy to share that info with you also. Anyway...here's the new info I have on James.

James was b. abt 1824 Alabama. I'm not sure where/when exactly, but he married Amanda and they are living in McNairy county, TN in the 1850 census with an infant son, James. Also living with them is Michael (probably James' father...b. abt 1780 NC). Also, living with them is a Margaret Kizer and her probable daughter Eliza. I think it's most likely that this was a sister-in-law who was widowed, although I suppose it's possible it's a sister with a daughter out of wedlock or some other relation. Anyway...James and Amanda are together in the 1860 and 1870 census. I'm guessing she died sometime after that and before James weds Mary Ann Williams (who is the mother to William F. Kizer).

As for the Kizer/Kiser name switch....it happened in my line also. (as a refresher...James is living next to a John Kizer family in 1850, and I think it's most likely they are brothers, but it's also possible they are cousins or uncle/nephew...this John Kizer line is my line). Anyway...my line also used to be Kizer...and is now Kiser. This switch did not occur overnight. It appears that for many years, the name could be found either way. I think back then, no one cared too much about the spelling....especially the people writing the info...as most of the average folks could not read or write. Anyway...it appears that slowly over the early half of the 1900s...the name moves towards the Kiser spelling. I think this is probably related to trying to de-Germanize their names during WWI. Also, don't discount other spellings, since I know that one of my Kizer branches, made a conscience decision to spell the name Kaiser, as that was the "proper" spelling according to someone's wife. lol!

Email me directly at dianak@hotmail.com. I'd be happy to share what I've got...including the info I have on Mary Ann Williams.
