On the "ah" - "ar" thing - There's a type of Southern accent that doesn't like words to end in vowel sounds. I was in my teens before I realized my cousin, Linder, spelled her name Linda.

Think of that classic old movie, "Ole Yeller." Now what color was that dog?

This is also the origin of the name of little, bitty bugs that burrow in your skin, chiggers, from chigoe, and of a racial epithet that should be obvious.

Now, personally I'm looking for a Sarah Keziah, who married William Douglas Winchester, probably in VA, and had a son, also named William Douglas, born about 1750 in VA.
