HI Dan,please read my posting below yours (by Patrick Russell). There may have been more Kleine relatives in Cincy than we all realize.I am just beginning to try and figure them out.
Your mention of Agnes Kleine being a Godparent, along with Frederick Kleine, to Frederick Kleine (born 1850; died 1938) flagged my interest.Agnes Kleine (b circa 1814 Oldenburg) was married to Joseph Kleine (b 1814, Oldenburg)--known to have started out in the merchant tailoring business in Over-the-Rhine (downtown Cincy) when he came to the US around 1837.They moved up the hill to East Walnut Hills to escape the sickness from the swampy conditions below.Joseph continued is merchant tailor busines downtown (we believe). We know from information from his granddaughter that Joseph Kleine had a brother, Fred. Both brothers were successful community builders and helped establish the well-know St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church at the NE corner of Madison/MLK and Woodburn streets in the East Walnut Hills neighorhood in the 1880's.
However your Frederick Kleine b 1854 doesn't seem to corroborate with my Fred (b circa 1821) and Mary (Elizabeth?) Kleine (b circa 1828)(1880 census) who had the following children:Edward b 1858, Josephine b 1860, Elizabeth 1862, FREDERICK, born 1864 and Ida b 1866.
However, I have found that sometimes first names get switched around with middle names (Maybe you Fred's dad's name was Henry Fred or Fred Henry, etc.).
If your Frederick's birth is not firm or that perhaps the head stone was really 1864 (rather than 54), then I think we may have some definite relationships.
From about 1850 to 1877 the St. Francis Church was located at Hackberry and McMillan, a little east of Victory and Woodburn Streets. The current St. Francis Church was build in 1877 and Fred and Joseph (brothers) were instrumental in helping "grow" the church.Perhaps you know which church they got married in.I don't recall where St. James Cemetery is.I will also check the 1910 and 1920 census for Frederick and Bernadena Burwinkle.I will also check 1860 and 1870 census for Burwinkle, which might give us a clue where she grew up.
My interest is in the Detmer/Kleine families that were in East Walnut Hills seemingly from about 1845-1890 or so.There are two national historic homes listed AN Detmer and Henry and Josephine (Detmer) homes within one or two blocks of the present St.Francis Church. There are also three historic districts in this immediate area. The "Cleinview Avenue"-- a North-south street just east of Woodburn from about McMillan to a few blocks north of Madison/MLK Blvd. was named after the Joseph and Agnes Kleine family. He built alot of homes in the area....along with carrying on a very successful merchant tailoring trade with relatives and family members. He had to order to build these homes (gave one to his daughter, Josephine) and donated a $20,000 altar to the St. Francis church in 1887.A lot more information available.Hope there's a match, would like to share my info with you.
