My husband's family name was originally Kley. Johann Hermann Heinrich Kley and Anna Margarethe Meyer of Belm (small town next to Osnabruck) had a son Christian Rudolph Kley born 1781 who married Maria Elisabeth Gildehaus, also of Belm. Maria Elisabeth and Christian Rudolph lived on property that she had inherited, and the couple took her last name when they married. I understand this was a common practice in Germany at that time.
