Klindts from Davenport Iowa to San Diego

I am descended from Karl Klindt who was hired by the government to take photos of the indians in the southwest. He arrived in San Diego circa 1880, and there married Martha Becker, whose father started the first German Newspaper in San Diego. I am looking for information on life in Iowa and prior. I have heard he learned some native american languages from Antione LeClaire. I also know there are some Klindt homes in Davenport that are historically significant and would like to know why. I am also interested in photos taken by him. Thanks for any help.
