Short biography in "History of York County, Pa.," p. 106, and biography of Samuel H. Klugh in the same publication, p. 802.

!John was a carpenter in Franklin Twp. for thirty years, then in 1860 he established a mercantile business in Franklintown Boro, where he was also Postmaster and Justice of the Peace. In 1881 he sold his business to a son-in-law,
George Lehmer, and became a farmer. He had extensive real estate holdings, including a 250 acre farm and 100 acres of woodland in Franklin Township, 10 lots and to houses in Franklintown, and 234 acres in Washington Twp. He was an active member of the Franklintown Lutheran Church, having given the land upon which the church was built and later was instrumental in building a new church.

!John served as a Captain in Company I, 209th Regiment, Pa. Volunteers. He was wounded at Ft. Steadman, Mar 25, 1865.

!John and Henrietta appear to have had ten or eleven children.

!Names and data for children have been extracted from 1) Franklin Church Cemetery records, 2) biography

of Capt John Klugh (History of York county, Pa., 1806), tombstones in the Major John Klugh lot of Franklin Church Cemetery, and 3) biography of Samuel H. Klugh (History of York Co., PA, 1806).

!In 1907, the date of the publication, "History of York County," the following children of John and Henrietta were living: Mary, Alice, Harry (Henry), John and Milton B. Mary (m George Lehmer) and Harry (Henry) are known from records
of Maytown Lutheran Church. Alice, John and Milton B. are not reflected in these church records, nor are they buried in the cemetery.

!Children of Major John and Henrietta R. Klugh who appear to have lived to maturity: Mary (b. abt 1850), Harry (Henry), Alice, John and Milton B.

!Several other infant burials in the cemetery of Franklin Church have not been connected with specific parents. They all date to the 1880's, and are most likely grandchildren of Major John Klugh or of George Klugh, his brother. The
burials are: Margaret Klugh, July 31, 1882-Jan. 25, 1885; Milton Klugh, June 16, 1880-July 17, 1880; Hattie Klugh, Sept. 2, 1881-Oct. 16, 1881, and Elmira Frances Klugh, d. Aug 13, 1882, age 6 yrs, 11 mo, 7 days (b. Sept. 6, 1876).

!Another burial presents a problem of interpretation: Cora M. Klugh, Jan. 12,1860-Aug. 25, 1928.

!Cora would have been of the generation of the children of Major George Klugh,
but is not mentioned as his child in either Major John's biography or the biography of Samuel H. Klugh (History of York Co., 1907 and 1886, respectively.)

!Also listed in Major John Klugh's household in 1900 is an Alvaretta Klugh, listed as a daughter, 9 years of age, born May 1885. She must surely be a grandchild since Henrietta would have been past fifty in 1885.

Franklin Township
George Lehmer
is a native of York County, and was born October 1, 1844, a son of Cornelius and Eve (Koch) Lehmer, of York County. His grandfather, Philip Lehmer, also of York County, was a farmer, owning about 500 acres of land in Washington, Franklin and Carroll Townships. Cornelius Lehmer was also engaged in farming, and is still living in Carroll Township. He had seven children: Mary, George, Leah (deceased), Sarah (deceased), James (deceased), Philip H. and Andrew J. George Lehmer was brought up on the farm, assisting his father until the age of sixteen years, when he enlisted, October 1, 1862, in Company D, Eighty-fourth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, and with his regiment engaged in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, where he was wounded in the right arm; he was in the engagements of Mine Run, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor, North Ann River, Petersburg, Mine Explosion and Richmond. At the close of the war he returned home, and in 1868 went to Michigan, where he served two years as an apprentice at carpentering; returning to York County, he followed painting and carpentering four years. In 1872 he married Mary Klugh, daughter of Capt. John Klugh, one of the most prominent men of this township. Mr. Lehmer became a partner with his father-in-law in the mercantile business, and in 1881, took charge of the business himself, at which he has since been very prosperous. In the spring of 1884 he and J. S. Bentz, of Carroll Township, went into business in Washington Township, thus making him one of the four leading business men of this section of the county. In 1880 he was licensed enumerator of Franklin and Washington Townships, and in 1863 was appointed mercantile appraiser of York County. He has had six children, five living: Ralph F., Viola,
Walter S., Hattie, Georgia (deceased), and Morris.
