*[There must be an error with the naturalization records regarding the year that is on record as to when John Knapper emigrated to the US. It could not have been in 1880 because an 1881 census taken in the UK states the following:

11 Chetwynd Street, Smallthorne, Stoke on Trent

Name Age Occupation Born

HOWARD P. KNAPPER, 87, LOCAL SURGEON FOR 35 YEARS

ST. PETERSBURG – Dr. Howard P. Knapper, a general surgeon here for 35 years, died Sunday (Oct. 27, 1991) at his home in northeast St. Petersburg. He was 87.

Although he had a medical history of heart problems for more than a year, the cause of his death was unknown, his son, Dr. William H. Knapper of Pelham, N.Y., said Tuesday.

For much of his career locally, Dr. Knapper was prominently associated with Florida Power Corp. and the American Legion Hospital for Crippled Children. He was named chief of staff in 1960 of the predecessor of All Children’s Hospital.

He also delivered perhaps the city’s first set of triplets, three girls born to Virginia and Joseph L’heureux at Mound Park Hospital in 1946.

That was the year he launched his local career after finishing military service at MacDill Air Force base in Tampa. His first office was in the old Florida Power Corp. Building at Fifth Street and First Avenue S with Dr. T. R. Griffin.

Dr. Griffin was the power company’s doctor, and when he retired three years later, Dr. Knapper took on those duties while continuing as a private doctor.

In 1958, Dr. Knapper and Dr. Charles W. Martin, a pioneer St. Petersburg dentist who died May 3, built an office building at 2000-2010 Fifth Avenue N. for their separate practices. He remained there until retiring in 1981.

The son of a barber, Howard Park Knapper was born in Edinburg, Pa. He and his parents, Clara and William G. Knapper, brought him to St. Petersburg around 1916. His father remained here for many years to operate a barbershop on First Avenue N across from the courthouse.

But after a year, the youngster returned to Pennsylvania to live with relatives while finishing high school. Later, he took premedical studies at Gettysburg (Pa.) College, and graduated in 1940 from Temple University School of Medicine. He received surgical training and interned at the University of Pittsburgh.

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps and Army Air Forces as a doctor at Miami Beach, Traux Field, Madison, Wis.; and Kearns Field, Salt Lake City; and in the Antilles Air Command in Puerto Rico before being transferred to central Florida.

From duty at the Lakeland Air Base, he became chief of surgical services at MacDill at the time of his discharge as a major in 1946.

Dr. Knapper was a life member of the Association of Military Surgeons, the Pinellas County Medical Society, Florida Medical Association and the Elks. He was a member of the International College of Surgeons, St. Petersburg Yacht Club, Lakewood County Club and American Legion Post 125.

A 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner, he belonged to St. Petersburg Lodge 139 F&AM, St. Petersburg.

Besides his son, who is also a physician, survivors include three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. today at john S. Rhodes, east Chapel, 635 Fourth St. N. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. Arthur Ross III and the Rev. Dr. Alton H.
