Hello Julie

The thing that really interests me is the number of Knappers who seem to originate from Kidsgrove and many of them miners. My grt grt grandfather William Knapper, a miner was born in Kidsgrove. He named his eldest son Herbert. There are only two Herbert Knappers in the 1881 census, my grt grandfather who was born in Burslem and another who was a beerseller and a miner and was born in Kidsgrove. There is not a great deal of difference in age between this Herbert and my William Knapper and I am beginning to think that they were maybe brothers certainly as William named his eldest son Herbert. Herbert was not a common Christian name. It is entirely possible that many of the Knappers living in “The Potteries” towards the end of the 1800s had their roots in a single Knapper family living in Kidsgrove at the beginning of that century. If that is so then maybe you, Alice and myself share a common ancestor, but the question is who?? I know, it is only speculation and maybe wide of the mark, but it is interesting nevertheless.
Now I know that you have the 1881 census, but did you spot the following?

       Dwelling:       Market Street Beerhouse
       Census Place:       Wolstanton, Stafford, England
Source:       FHL Film 1341649 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 2707 Folio 84 Page 62
       Marr       Age       Sex       Birthplace
James KNAPPER       W       62        M       Kidsgrove, Stafford, England
       Rel:       Head
       Occ:       Beerseller
Mark KNAPPER       U       30        M       Kidsgrove, Stafford, England
       Rel:       Son
       Occ:       Coal Miner Unemployed
Sarah Jane KNAPPER       U       19        F       Kidsgrove, Stafford, England
       Rel:       Daur
       Occ:       Assists In Beerhouse

James has obviously lost his wife, he was born in Kidsgrove and he has a daughter named Sarah ??named after her mother maybe??

Best wishes
Leon Knapper
