Hi Derek,
Just a possible thought, I have found a "Leather" born 2nd July 1881 20 Victoria Row, Stanley,Wakefield. Fathers name Joseph Knapper - Coal Miner, mothers name Elizabeth Ann Knapper formerley Hollingshead registered 3 Aug 1881 hence she would not be on the 1881 census.

I know the name is slightly different but I had the same problem when researching other relatives because of the dialect and the registrar writing what he hears, hence it is possible that he missed the "A" off.

Hope this is of some help to you, you may be able to find her on the 1891 census if this is the right one.

Good Luck and Best Wishes
Jeanette
