Your Knaas/Knaufs may be Knaus/Knauss. Some people may have still used the old-style s even in 1853, which was almost identical to an f, and when a double s was written, it was always the f-style s followed by the s-style s. It can be very confusing. The last George F. MIGHT be a George Frederick Knauss, b. 1825, son of a George Frederick Knauss.
