I'm confused and I know there has got to be somebody out there who can help me figure out this enigma. My branch of the Knecht family came to St. Leon, IN., sometime between 1838 & 1839, as their last 2 children were born in St. Leon. Johann Jacob Knecht (b. 1801 d. 1889) and Mary Margaretha Schnabel (b.1802) were married 20 Apr 1823 in Germany. They were the parents of Francis Xavier Knecht (b. 6 Sep 1823 d. 1 Jun 1913). I descend from Francis Xavier through Melchoir Ludovicus "Lewis" Knecht, then Edward Knecht, and then Don Knecht. The part that I can't follow is who Johann Jacob is descended from. Someone says Heinrich, but as with all the other given Knecht names they repeat a great deal and I have found several Heinrichs and Henrys. Some of this family came into this country through the Port of Philadelphia, but I am finding that some came in through Baltimore as well. From what I have seen posted on this list, it appears that I may descend from the Knechts of Maryland. Anyone care to speculate??
