Seeking info. concerning my immigrant ancestor, Johann Knecht. He was born on June 7, 1828 in Germany or Prussia. His death record states that he was a veteran of the U.S.-Mexican War, 1846-1848 so he must have immigrated around that time. Family oral history states that he was the sole survivor of his family after a shipwreck as they were approaching America. His name was Anglicized to John Kent. He settled in Jo Daviess Co., IL where he married Mary Gokey on 12-1-1851. They had 13 children. They later moved to Richland Co., WI where John died in 1897. Interested in sharing info. One theory is that he arrived via New Orleans or even Galveston, TX. Probably passed through St. Louis in the 1840s. Could there be a connection? THANKS!

Joni Leffler
