I have a Johann Knecht (Anglicized to John Kent), born June 7, 1828, possibly in Prussia. His death record states that he was a veteran of the U.S. - Mexican War, 1846-1848. The story I've been told by other relatives is that he immigrated in the early 1840s either through NY or New Orleans. He was supposed to have been proclaimed a hero after rescuing his fellow passengers when their ship sank as they were approaching America. Unfortunately, he was the only survivor in his own family. He married Mary Gokey on 12-1-1851 in Jo Daviess Co., IL. They farmed there until moving to Byrd's Creek, Richland Co., WI in the 1880s. He died in WI in 1897. Johann "John" and his wife had 13 children. Any connections?
