I have a Johann Knecht (Anglicized to John Kent), born June 7, 1828 in Prussia or Bayern. He immigrated about 1840-1846. His death record indicates that he was a veteran of the U.S. - Mexican War, 1846-1848. The story I've been told by relatives is that he was proclaimed a hero due to having saved many fellow passengers after their ship sank as they were approaching America. Unfortunately, none of his own family survived. He married Mary Gokey on 12-1-1851 in Jo Daviess Co., IL. They farmed there until the 1880s when they moved to Byrd's Creek, Richland Co., WI. They had 13 children. He died in WI in 1897.
