Frederick "Austin" Knipe of OHIO

Austin and his wife Catherine are found in the 1860 Census of Springfield Township, Williams County, Ohio (Page 69). The Index for the 1860 Census of Ohio spelled Austin's family name as "Knife." It should be "Knipe." The LDS marriage record indicates Austin's full name is "Frederick Austin Knipe." Catherine's full maiden name was "Catherine Rebecca Smith." The name Austin most likely came from Rev. James B. Austin, who baptized Frederick Austin Knipe.

Per the 1882 History of Springfield Township, Williams County, Ohio, page 432:

"Austin Knipe must have been the first white person born within its (Springfield Township - my note) present limits. From the family record I find that Frederick Austin Knipe was born on the 11th day of September, 1834. He was baptized in 1835 by James Austin, a minister of the Gospel. Mr. Knipe lives at present in Defiance County, having moved from Springfield Township about two years ago."

Page 443:

"Springfield Grange #499: The grange was organized February 3, 1874, with twenty-six charter members. The following were the first officers: Austin Knipe, Chaplain; C.M. Clark, Master; D.S. Clark, Overseer; Mrs C.M. Clark, Ceres; Miss Alice Clark, Lady Assistant Steward.
