thanks for the reply. Seems that there certainly would be some relationship, but think it probably goes back further as William born about 1798 married Jane Vale and had three children, Jane, James and John. James is my ggg-grandfather, married in England and came to Australia in 1857. I know nothing of William's siblings, Jane married in Essex in 1847 I think and I have no knowledge of what happened to John. There were another family of Knopps in Victoria and can be seen when looking through the BDM records. Where were your Knopps? In Victoria?
I will dig out my records and give you more exact info soon
