Hi, Marg
My name is John Mottram and I found your message whilst investigating my Knopp ancestors.

My great grandmother was Eliza Perkins nee Knopp 1858 to parents George and Eliza Knopp. George was born in Grays, Essex in 1814 to parents James (born in West Tilbury c1791) and Sarah Knopp.

I must confess that I am a relative beginner to genealogy and have benefited tremendously by registering with However, research on the Family Search genealogy website would suggest that other children James and Jane were born in Stifford in circa 1818 to the same parents James and Sarah Crouch. If this is the case then it is very likely that your James is the brother of my great, great grandfather George Knopp.

As you know the name Knopp is quite uncommon and most of these related family members were resident in the West Thurrock area of Essex, England. It is believed that the Knopp family originated in German and some members came to England in the 1500s.

Inputs from an individual named Frederick Knopp on the website would indicate the following:

Thomas Knopp died 1754 Leigh, Essex ------ James Knopp born 1754 West Thurrock, Essex ----- James Knopp born 1791 West Thurrock, Essex ------- George Knopp born 1814 Grays, West Thurrock.

Does any of the above tie up with your own family history?

Regards, John Mottram.

Ps: You may know all of the above in which case I hope I have not wasted your time.
