James Monroe Knowlton is #2474 in the HISTORY OF THE KNOWLTON FAMILY . . . by Chas. Stocking. He was b Nov 16, 1821, son of John Knowlton (964) and Lois Bemis [good old New England name] of Dublin, NH. John and his brother Jeremy (965) moved on to Sandy Creek, NY, and, as you say, Cicero, NY.
Jeremy appears in NY in 1830 (using census), IL in 1850 and 1860, and IA in 1870. Jeremy died before 1880, but his branch of the Knowltons were in IA into the 20th c. A Deb Noeller is researching this line, and I will give you her last email address if you email me directly.
John (964) must have died in NY when your James was a child because his death date has been given as Dec 12, 1824, 1831, or 1832. Some census work should clear that up. John had older children named Sylvester (2472) and Josiah (2473).
