Captain Newton Cannon, of Sussex County, Delaware, shipped out to sea in Nov 1779 from Baltimore, trying to beat the British blockade and deliver bread, pork and supplies to the French fleet in the Atlantic. He didn't make it, never heard from again and, as per usual, it took 7 years for him to be declared dead, in Sussex County, Delaware courts.
He had a bunch of kids by his wife, Rebecca Knowlton, of Newbury, Mass. The kids, George, Frances, James, Newton, Henry and Samuel, were baptised through the years in Newbury, Mass between 1765 and 1775. From that I infer he made Newburyport a regular port of call and visited with Rebecca, who remained in Massachusetts.
Rebecca Knowlton was the daughter of George and Joanna Knowlton.
What happened to the kids? By 1786, when the estate is settled in Delaware, George is of age and is the executor and probably living in Delaware. However Samuel would only be 11. I think Rebecca Knowlton Cannon remarried. She is not the executrix of the Captain Newton Cannon estate.
