The answer is that both are immigrants to America. There is no proof that a Capt. William Knowlton ever existed. Therefore, it makes no difference whether you are descended from John or from William regardless of the fact that they are not brothers. Your line of descent from one or the other remains the same, and any ancestors of women they married should also remain the same. Get the interested women in your family to pool their money and pay for another test for your "botched" Knowlton male. Do you belong to the Knowlton mailing list? I suggest you join, if not, and there you will find many of us participating in the same Family Tree dna test site.
