My wife is decended from the following Nutson family.
This information may be of some help to someone out there, and perhaps somene can provide more information on this family?
Knud Stousland (b. 1775) lived in Christiansand Norway. This southen seaport is now spelled Kristiansand. His son, Johannes Knudsen (b. 1791) came to Amhersburg at an early age and changed his namke to John Nutson. John and his wife Margaret are identified as the parents of Lewis and Elizabeth on St. John's Anglican Church Records, Windsor Ont., Their brother John Nutson was born in Amhersburg Ont. in 1816
John Nutson married Mariah (Maria Ann_ Scratch about 1843. The 1861 census of Gosfield Township shows him as a 44 yr. old tanner, attending the Church of England. The tannery covered several acres & was valued at $800.00. He also owned two horses & three cows. The tannery ran on steam heat generated by burning bark. His house was 1&1/2 stories & only one family lived in it.His family consisted of himself, his wife & their 6 children. (Another male child died in 1860 at the age of 4 months.)John died sometime between Iah;s birth in 1862 & the 1871 census. Then the 46 yr. old Mariah is the wife of Alexander Wilkinson & is living with him, two of his children & Gordon & Ida Nutson, children of John Nutson.
Mariah Scratch's grndfather Leonard, anglicized from the German "Kratz" Leonard Kratz was born March 8, in Dudenhofen, Hesse (near Franfurt), Germany &married Mary Munger. * Their son John Scratch was born in Gosfield Twp., Essex Ont. on July 24 1795. He married Sarah Mallot (b. May 10 1799) in Nov. 18`8. Their daughter Maria Scratch, (we have her photo) was born Oct. 28 1824 in Gosfield and married John Nutson. They had 8 children, the eldest was Louisa Nutson.
*My brother Ron sends this thumnail sketch of Leonard Kratz. He came to America in 1776 as a Hessian mercenary. He was in the British army which surrendered at Saratoga NY, was taken captive to Virgina for 2 yrs..was released. settled with Mary in Kentucky. was captured by Indians, was ransomed at Detroit, & joined Butler's Rangers. He was given a 200 acre land grant in Gosfield, Essex Co. Ont. in 1792.
We have a good deal of information on John Scratch & Sarah Mallott, John James Nutson, Louisa Catherine Nutson 7 their children if anyone wants it.
