Family lore says that our first kelly relative to arrive in the US was Frederick Koehle, coming through Ellis Island prior to 1873. Once in the US the name was simplified to Kelly. Frederick was an extremely tall and large man of his day and was nicknamed, the gentle giant. I know nothing of his wife but lore say she was Irish. Frederick had a son Charles Frederick Kelly, born in Sept 1873 in PA and owned a general store in Weisport PA, he married Elizabeth Lea Graver and had two children: Beatrice Viola Kelly (1902) and Paul Ishael Kelly (1900).
Have you come across any information on this Frederick Koehle in your research?
Cindy Kelly
Unrelated, another branch of my famiy is through Ulrich Steffen from Switz. and Alsace, France (German speaking)
