Dear Bernard,
I am extremely pleased to hear from you! You are the first tangible link that I've been able to find to the Kolbe descendants in Scotland.
I will very gladly share with you what I know. The IGI is more-or-less correct. So far we've been able to identify at least 14 children for Johann Gotlieb (AKA John Gotlieb or Johan Gotlieb or just plain John) and Mary (surname unknown).
According to my current research, your Jane Day Kolbe was their 13th child. However, it appears that a lot of their children died very young and I have reason to suspect that there may not even have a complete list of children. Moreover, it appears fairly probably that Johan had been married at least twice, with both wives having the name of Mary.
If you contact me privately at [email protected] I'll gladly give you whatever else I've got. As for Johann Gotlieb, he had a tailor business and seemed to have been moderately financially secure. His second oldest son, George Augustus Kolbe (1802-1844) emigrated to South Africa and became the ancestor of most of the Kolbes there. He was my great-great grandfather's grandfather.
I have Charles Samuel Kolbe listed as the eight child, so yes indeed, the father would be our common ancestor. During the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 my great grandfather Kolbe was wounded and sent to Scotland for specialized treatment. Apparently he then looked up his distant relations there and stayed with them until the end of the war. I have one or two pictures which we think must have been of this family. On the back is written something which looks like "Gribble?" or Griddle?"
I can send you copies of those pictures if you like. My grandmother said the Scottish family were involved in a sweets manufacturing business. We were always told that the Scottish family took exceptionally good care of our great-grandfather and although nobody known who they are anymore, they are still well spoken of to this day--more than a hundred years later. That shows how good deeds can sometimes ripple across time in a most unexpected way.
I would be extremely keen to learn anything I can about your family connections in Scotland. I look forward to hearing from you. By the way, a fellow researcher, Margaret Duke, recently managed to find Johann Gotlieb's last will and testament for us. I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear about it.
Best regards,
