Armistice Day Anniversary

July 27, 2003 marks the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the armistice at Panmunjom, ending the fighting in Korea.

On June 25, 1950, North Koreaan troops poured over the 38th parallelin an attempt to brilng South Korea under communist control. For the next three years, United Nations forces led by the United States fought to keep the South Korean people free and stem the spread of comunism. In places like Bloody Ridge, Pusan Perimeter, Heartbreak Ridge, Chosen Reservoir would see seesaw battles that raged in freezing winters to sweltering summers.

By the time the armistice was signed, 33,629 Americans gave their lives in battle.

Today, the fruits of the blood shed by American and United Nations troops is a democratic, prosperous and progressive Republic of Korea. The young Americans who fought and died in Korea kept faith with a just cause, and in so doing, kept faith with the principals and ideals on which our Nation was founded. They brought great honor to our Nation and themselves as defenders of freedom.

Korea, the "The Forgotten War, Remembered."
