7th Infantry Division John James O'Brien

My Uncle John James OBrien was a member of the 7th Infantry Division during WWII and moved on to Korea when the unit was assigned there. I believe this was before the conflict began.

John was in the 13th Engineers. I don't know which company.

John was retired in 1955 after 13 years service. He lived in Leavenworth early after he retired, probably moved to Wichita, on to Hawaii, and back to Leavenworth where he died in 1971. John is buried in the National Cemetery in Fort Leavenworth.

John comes from Philadelphia. Since he has no kin as defined by the Government I have had a difficult time getting any information (DD-214) from the Army since I am not his son etc.

John was awarded the Bronze Star during WWII. I have information he received 3 Purple Hearts-why I don't know. I would like to learn why.

If anyone remembers John I would appreciate any information you may have. Any suggestions to tracking down commendations for medals would be greatly appreciated. My nephew has the medals but we don't have any documentation to go with them.
