Richard: I have been working on the KORNEGAY family since the 1960's and this old information was sent to me many years ago without documentation. I have since found a few things to help bear it out and I think you have found the husband John STEVENS who was 1st husband of Mourning because of this Wayne Co NC deed Bk 10; p.212: Mourning KONNEAGAY deed of gift to her two granddaughters, Mourning CROW, daughter of John CROW and Susannah, his wife, of South Carolina, and Mourning STEVENS, daughter of Needham STEVENS and Peggy, his wife, of the state of Georgia, witnessed by H. STEVENS, Feb, 11, 1815.
On p. 229: Jacob KORNEGAY and wife, Elizabeth KORNEGAY, deed of gift to Bryan KORNEGAY "where we now live and Mourning KORNEGAY, it being all of the land that descended to my wife, Elizabeth KORNEGAY, by the death of her father, Willis WIGGINS," witnessed by Dan'l KORNEGAY, May 31, 1815.
Deed Bk 7, p. 469: George KORNEGAY and Mourning KORNEGAY deed of gift to "my" son-in-law, John CROW, of Darlington Dist., South Carolina, Jan. 3, 1804. No other children were memtioned besides these so I don't know about the other children James, John and Elizabeth STEVENS and why they weren't mentioned. Sorry to say I don't have proof that Mourning was a STEPHENS, but that old data has proved pretty reliable except for George I's second wife being widow Susannah Stechey STEVENS which was found to be in error.
