Kovacs Family Genealogy Forum
I've been researching my Hungarian family tree by extensively studying records microfilmed by the Mormons. The results have been truly amazing. I first located the birth record of my maternal grandfather, Michael Laszlo Szucs, in Battonya, Bekes Co. [formerly Csanad Co.], 16 Sept. 1885. Then, using those same records, I've now been able to trace several of his lines back to the 1700s.
I've recently discovered that one of my 3-great-grandfathers was EMERICUS [or Imre] KOVACS. He was born either in Dormand, Hungary or in Tiszabo, Hungary [both located slightly east of Budapest] in circa 1776. I know very little about him except that he married (perhaps his 2nd marriage) the much-younger CATHARINA [or Katalin] KISS (pronounced Kish) about 1818 and then moved to Battonya. According to her death record, Catharina was b. in Tiszabo in 1797. They had three children: Catharina (1819-1897), Anna (b. 1822), and Emericus [Imre] (b. 1824). Emericus Kovacs Sr. died in Battonya in 1826, age 50, and his widow Catharina (Kiss) d. there in 1853, age 56.
Their daughter Catharina Kovacs (1819-1897) m. Michael Szucs (1825-1858) in 1846. He was a native of Csanadpalota, a town about 15 miles west of Battonya. I have studied Csanadpalota microfilm and have now traced that Michael's ancestry back to his great- grandfather, Matyas Szucs, b. c.1730 -- my 5-great-grandfather! I never EVER thought I would get back this far in Hungary....
I would be delighted to make contact with anyone researching the Kovacs family from central Hungary [Dormand and Tiszabo] or from southeastern Hungary [Battonya].
