Kovacs Family Genealogy Forum
My subsequent research has shown that my 3-great-grandfather, EMERICUS KOVACS, was born in Tiszabo, Hungary, 2 November 1780 [not 1776], the eldest child of FRANCISCUS KOVACS (b. 1758) and wife, ELISABETHA (GULYAS). This means that when Emericus died in Battonya, Csanad megye, Hungary on 4 March 1826, he was not age 50 (as stated in his death record), but rather in his 46th yr. of age.
Emericus Kovacs' wife, CATHARINA KISS, was born in Tiszabo, 28 April 1787, and was therefore age 66 when she d. in Battonya, 25 Sept. 1853. [Her death record said she was 56.] She was likely a cousin to her husband, as her parents were PAULUS [Paul] KISS and CATHARINA (KOVACS). When Paulus Kiss and Catharina Kovacs were married in Tiszabo on 7 February 1779, the ancient marriage record was kind enough to include the name of the bride's father: JACOB KOVACS. I now need to do more research to determine how Jacob Kovacs was related to Emericus Kovacs' father, Franciscus Kovacs. All of these people were from the same village.
In another of my grandfather's ancestral lines, I have discovered a THIRD Kovacs connection. My grandfather's mother was ROSALIA (KISS-FRINDRICK) SZUCS (1857-1919). She was a native of Battonya, but her paternal grandfather, JANOS KISS (1794-1835), was born in Jaszarokszallas, Hungary -- just to the southeast of Budapest. I recently discovered his birth entry in Jaszarokszallas Roman Catholic records: he was b. 18 October 1794, the son of FRANCISCUS KISS and ANNA (KOVACS). So here is one more Kovacs line to research.
Anyone who happens to have Kovacs roots going back to any of the locations outlined above, I may be able to share information with you. The Kovacs families in each of these towns -- Battonya, Tiszabo, and Jaszarokszallas -- are plentiful!
