Hi Jennifer,

If your grandfather's American name was "Charles", in Hungary he was either "Karoly" or "Kalman".

The surname KOVACS is extremely common. I have several Kovacs lines, none of which seem to be related to one another. Your best bet would be to make every effort to find out the exact town where your grandfather was born. If you can determine that, it's very likely that church records from that community have been microfilmed by the Mormons. They pretty much made a clean sweep of existing Hungarian records.
