Kowalski/Smith used similtaneously?
Does anyone know how and when these two names would be used similtaneously in the US?
My ggrandfather, Teofil Kowalski (Michael Smith) immigrated to Michigan in 1880.I have located a baptismal record for one child (Edward) in 1892, and the surname Kowalski was used, yet when Teofil's wife and infant daughter died in 1893, the death records use the name Smith. He remarried later in the year using the name Kowalski, however, the christening record for the next child born in 1894 lists Teofil Kowalski as the father, although the child was christened Ladislaw Smith, and subsequently went by the name Alfred Smith.
Is it possible that within the church, Kowalski was used, and publicly Smith was used??
If anyone can provide me with any guidance at all, I would certainly appreciate it!Thanks!
