I am interested in knowing more about your Margaretha Halmes who was married to Moritz Krieg. My great-grandmother was Helena Halmes, (1841-1918). According to the ship's passenger list, Helena accompanied her family to America from Antwerp in 1854 aboard the Canton. Other family members were listed as Martin, 50, (aka Barthel), Catherine, 50, (aka Maria or Margarita Catherina Noel), Marg., 28, Nicholas, 23, Mary, 18, and Mathias, 15. There is also a family legend that another sister remained in Prussia and did not come with the family.

This family originally went north. Another family member states that Barthel (Martin) died in Chicago, Illinois in 1860. Helena married Christoff Meyer in Oconto Co., Wisconsin in 1858. Christoff and Helena left for Nebraska soon after that and are found in Plattsmouth, Cass Co., Nebraska in 1860. Brother, Nicholas, is also there, a single man, working as a brick maker. I do not know what happened to the rest of the family, but wonder if your Mararetha might be the sister, Marg. of the passenger list.

I would be delighted to exchange information if we connect.
