The place is probably Alsance Lorrine (the East side of the river was Prussia in the mid 1800's the date is probably 1825-1830 My aunt told me that they walked across the border into the US so the point of entry was probably the New York area. John's oldest son was born in Germany 1848 and the second son born in US 1852 listed place as New York. John and Simon were probably brothers or cousins, there is less than 5 years difference in their ages. Please note all of the probably's My grand father (who died when I was 1 1/2 years old)
