KRESSIN spelling variation
Posted by: M. Clauss Date: May 10, 2000 at 23:17:00

I was surprised to find this GenForum for Kresin. I and a few others have spent time studying the KRESSIN family and as I look for Kressin surnames in various listings, I have seldom run into the spelling Kresin. I would like to remind people to look for both and other possibilities such as Kressen.

Recently a cousin doing research on the family pointed out a spelling variation using umlauts from German: Kroessin, where the "e" is the umlaut over the "o" most likely. This family name is Pommeranian, or Pommern. Immigrants settled in Wisconsin, Minnesota and nearby states. Pommern was an ancient German homeland in an area now taken over by Poland. The Kressins were Evangelical Lutherans.

My ancestors are Martin Kressin and Maria Treptow of Darsow, Pommern, and immigrated to Chippewa Co, WI and McLeod/Meeker Counties of Minnesota. Let me know if you are interested in exchanging notes.

And for anyone interested in Pommerania, you might like to attend Pommerntag in Milwaukee on June 25, 2000. See this Pommern website for information:

Also, try looking up the Kresin/Kressin name in the surname list found at
Die Pomerschen Leute is an important resource. Lots of good stuff.
