I am trying to find out the name of my great-great grandfather. My great grandfather immigrated to the United States from Emden, Germany in 1885. The only record I can find says that his father's name may have been Bye. I was informed by someone that Bye in German may stand for William. Karl wasn't sure about his birthdate, although he listed it as September 18, 1862. He married Gezina Ahrenholtz in March 1886 in the Iowa. She was born on January 21, 1864 in Oltsmasvane, Germany.

My question is--does Emden, Germany still exist? If so, how would one go about trying to find birth records for Karl or church records in Emden. Is Emden a part of Hannover? Also, does Oltsmasvane, Germany still exist?
