Greetings! I am hunting John A. Martindale, a clergyman in the 1800s. Here’s what I know: The 1880 Census shows him in Kansas in Walnut Township of Atchison County. He is listed as 40 years old, married, a clergyman, and insane. He was born in Indiana and his father is listed as being born in South Carolina. There is no mother listed. The other people in the home are a Haleen (sp?) Martindale, age 35. No relationship is listed. She is a married housekeeper. Children are: a daughter Luella F., age 12 and a nephew William Artell (sp?), age 17. There is also a 27 year-old boarder: a farm laborer named Henry Sipple. John A. & Pauline W. Martindale had a daughter named Luella F. She was born in 1868 in Iowa (probably in Clayton Township of Taylor County, as we know John and Pauline were living there in 1870). Does anyone know what became of her? John A. Martindale is also listed in the 1880 Census as being in the Lincoln State Hospital (for the insane) in Lincoln, Nebraska. Despite seeming to be in two places at nearly one time, I am just about convinced that he is the same John A. listed in the 1880 Census as living in the home of Haleen (sp?) Martindale--along with the 12 year-old Luella. I am thinking that Haleen is John A.'s sister--but I can't prove it. Can anyone fill in the blanks? Rev.
