From the Hoisington Dispatch, Thursday June 5, 1930, page 1:

SAUSEN

One of the saddest deaths that has occurred here for a long time was that of Simon Sausen which
occurred at the St. Rose hospital at the Bend at 1 o’clock Sunday, June 1:

Simon was taken sick with a pain in his side Tuesday afternoon of alst week while working in his
alfalfa field and was forced to quit work. He remained at the house all day Wednesday thinking a
rest would relieve him but his condition became worse and Thursday he was taken to the hospital
at the Bend where it was found an immediate operation for appendicitis was necessary. The
operation was performed that evening and it was found that the appendix had burst and the
doctors said there was only a bare chance for his recovery. Saturday evening it appeared to the
family that his condition was satisfactory and they returned home that night feeling that he was
on the road to recovery, but Simon took a turn for the worse Sunday morning and his wife and
children, mother and sisters, and other members of the family were sent for. Simon remained
conscious until about ten minutes before his death and conversed freely with the family until
about one hour before his death.

It was a sad blow to the community and particularly to the family and made doubly so as his
sister, Mrs. Sophia Demel, wife of Emil Demel, had died just ten days previously. Simon was
one of the most popular young men of the community. Everyone was his friend and he was a
friend to everybody. What more could anyone be?

He is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Millie [Mollie] Pudel of Olmitz, to whom he was
united in marriage exactly ten years ago the day of his death; two daughters, Inez and Esther; his
aged mother, Mrs. Emma Sausen, and two sisters, Mary and Lucy and other relatives and
unnumbered friends.

Funeral services were held at St. John’s church yesterday morning at 9 o’clock, conducted by
Rev. John F. Dambach and interment was made in St. John’s {Evangelistic] cemetery. The
funeral was one of the most largely attended ever held in Hoisington.
