Vandeveer family in Barton Co. Kansas and Oklahoma

I am doing research on the Vandeveer family. My great-grandfather was Alonzo (Lon) Vandeveer. I am stuck. I had heard that his mother committed suicide and his father was killed in a tractor accident, but can find no documentation of either. They lived near Ellinwood, Barton county Kansas in late 1870's and 1880's. Any information would be appreciated.
