The 1895 Kansas State Census is indexed and online here:

It indicates a Peter Peterson, age 69, living in Asherville Township, Mitchell County, born in Denmark. There is no family listed with him; perhaps Emma and the kids came out from Illinois sometime between 1895 and 1900. There are several other Peterson families in Mitchell County at the same time.
