Mary SMITH, age 60, b. Indiana, is shown on the 1900 census of Rice Co, Eureka Twp. The number of children listed as dead and living correspond with what is shown on a Civil War Widow's pension file for a Mary Ann Underwood SMITH, whose husband, Aaron, died in the Civil War. Many of the persons living near her are all related to each other by marriage, according to research found on the 'net. Some of the neighbors names are: Charles C. MAXWELL, who is living with the Eli WELCH family in dwelling next to Mary SMITH. On the other side is James WELCH and living with him and wife, Emma, is Ed KELLY and a male SMALLEY -- given name difficult to read. Mary Ann Underwood SMITH died in 1904. A notation at the end of her CW pension file mentioned a "Mrs. Ellen PENTILO". I am only guessing this may be her daughter. I suspect the Mary SMITH on the 1900 census is the same Mary Ann SMITH who migrated to Rice Co KS, in 1876, with her three children, Charles Francis SMITH, Ella and Rosamary. They are shown on the 1880 census, excluding Charles, who is shown living with a male MILLARD a few dwellings from Mary and daughters, and who was a neighbor of the UNDERWOODS in Hancock Co Indiana. Some of the other persons associated with Mary Ann Underwood SMITH'S family are: DICKSON, McCLELLAND, TURNER, COLE, KENNEDY, RULEY, SHIRLEY and WILSON. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with info concerning the above persons. Virgene in northwest Indiana Notify Administrator about this message?
