You can order the microfilmed newspapers through your local public or LDS Library to search for an obituary at no charge from the Kansas State Historical Society. go to the KSHS website, any good search engine can find it, and select interlibrary loan. Read the instructions and then select newspapers and continue on to select the particular paper(s) you need. Reading the paper yourself may be best because there may be some one liner notes of people who came from out of the area to the funeral, or even came before the death, legal notices & auction sale bills, etc. for your person. They also loan the state census for years ending in 5 from 1855 to 1925 which might be of help to you.

For probate work, contact the District Court, Rice County Courthouse, Lyons, KS (zip) Ask not only if there was a will, but a probate packet...which gives additional information if available.

State death certificates didn't start until July 1, 1911 in Kansas.

Good luck to you
