Kurmpel to Kimball ? Riverboat Captains?

The Kimball forum has a message dated 13 March, 1999, that says the Kuempels were well know riverboat captains on the Mississippi River, some buried in the Bellevue, Iowa Cemetery.

I am investigating the possibility that my ancestor was a descendant of this family. His name was Joseph K. Mattingly, son of Alexander Mattingly and Elizabeth Stamm who married in Randolph Co., IL, 1842 and were found in Chester, IL in the 1850 and 1860 census. Joseph's middle name was found only once on the Lee Co., AR census, so it could have been spelled as Kimble, Kimbel, Kimball, or Kimbal.
