Julius Janke was my Grandfather Philip Eckstein's stepfather. My father, is Phil's only child Marvin Eckstein. I can remember visiting "Great Grampa" Janke at his place in Elmwood on the corner of Castle Avenue and Grey Street during the 1960's. My Great Grandmother was Christina Janke (nee Kull). She was Gustav Kull's sister. Christina married William (Wilhelm) Eckstein in Lutz and had two boys with him there, Andrew and Philip (1903-1987). She left her marriage and came to Canada in 1906 with the two boys (a bold move in those days), lived in Elmwood and married Julius Janke. Gustav Kull's wife was Emma Janke, who was Julius Janke's sister. My Grandfather Phil and Gustav's son Ernie worked together at Co-Op Implements for decades. My father Marvin worked at Co-Op as well during the 1940's. My grandparents Phil and Margaret(nee Petrie)would take me and my older sister Tobie for a car ride to Manitoba Sausage on Dufferin where Bert Janke was President. I guess that makes Bert Janke my grandfather's half brother, if Christina was his birth mother. We lived on Beach Avenue in Elmwood. My grandparents' home at 880 beach was built by Great Grampa Janke. My Grandparents also lived on McCalman Ave. and Castle Ave. years before. My father figures Julius, which would be his step-grandfather, built at least fifty homes in Elmwood, from whom my father learnt to frame houses himself. Many of the Elmwood Germans from Russia (Lutz, although at the time in Poland, now Ukraine, was administered by Russia)knew each other before emigrating to Canada. My grandfather's older brother Andrew (Andy) lived on Talbot Avenue and had at least two sons that I recall, my father's cousins Alvin and Bobby Eckstein. They are obviously related to Bert Janke the same way my father is.
