I'm not sure there is a connection.
I found out more information about my great grandfather from my late mother's sister, Evelyn Chapiewsky. She lives in LaCrosse, Wis. Her grandfather, Carl Kumm was born in 1824 in Germany. Aunt Evelyn said he was born in Baden Baden Germany which is near France. He was a Corporal in Company A of Wisconsin Infantry during the civil war. At his time of enlistment, March 10, 1865 he was 39 yrs. old and had been a farmer who had resided in Concord, Jefferson, Wisconsin. He was married to Matilda Friebeck and had 13 children - my grandmother, Wilomena was one of these children. She was born in 1879. My grandmother, who was called Minnie, married my grandfather, Anton Chapiewsky on Sept. 13, 1905.
I will ask my Aunt Evelyn if she knows of any connection with Carl F. Kumm. It's strange they were born the same year, both came from Germany, with the same first and last names. Let me know if the information I just mentioned fits in with your family history.
