C.W.This is what I know of your family heritage.Elizabeth Kuykendall b. ca 1742 in either Va or NJ died after 1805 in Ga. She was the daughter of James and Sarah (Coburn) Kuykendall.James was baptized in the Dutch Reform Church of New York on 21 Oct 1721 s/o Matthew and Jennetje(Westvael) Kuykendall.I'm sure you can pick it up and go backward from there on your own.Jamescame to NC where he received several grants of land in what was then, Anson Co. NC (now York Co. South Carolina) He died ca 1766 in Mecklenburg which was cut off from Anson in Nov 1762.He married ca 1748 (I don't know where) to Sarah Coburn b. 1729 and died 16 July 1807 in York Co. SC where she left her will dated Feb 8 1806 and it was probated 3 Aug 1807 Will Book A, pg 24C File No. 228. She was the d/o Jonathan and Catherine Coburn, son of James Coburn who died ca 1748 in Augusta Co. Va.Sarah is buried in the Bethesda Presbyterian Church Cemetary in York Co. SC.There are some excellent documents published in Velma Kuykendall Winn's books, "The Kuykendall Families of America" that you will probably want to read if you haven't already done so.Back to Elizabeth and her husband James Armstrong.
One of my sources say that Elizabeth died in York Co. SCand that James Armstrong Sr b. 1740 PA died after 1805 in SC.I have not been able to confirm this. What I have is that in 1778, James Armstrong and James Kuykendall (son of James and Sarah) received land grants in Wilkes Co. Ga.In 1805 they were in Clark Co. Ga.In another book, "The Stringer Family and Kin" by Alvin Ward Vogtle of Birmingham, Ala. writes the following on Page 5 under Early Americans "Elizabeth Kuykendall, the fair maid of Dutch descent, with flaxen hair and eyes of deepest blue - a homemaker and housekeeper beyond compare - who married the grey-eyed lad of Scot descent, James Armstrong, restless, bold and daring."The book includes a genealogical chart as of Dec 15 1968 and includes the following:James Armstrong Sr. b. abt 1739 Pa died after 1805 SC S.C. census 1790Soldier Colonial Wars Revolutionary Soldier. son of James Armstrong from Lancaster Co. Pa b. abt 1710 d abt 1760 NC (this would still be known as Anson Co NC)Soldier Colonial Wars wife Jane or Jean b. abt 1759 Anson Co. NC.That was all he knew about the Armstrongs.
From another source, (1, Revolutionary Soldiers of Gaston Co. NC) James Armstrong b. ca 1710 Solider Colonial Wars from Lancaster Co. PA wife Jean O (or Jane).
James left a will in Anson Co. NC 11 May 1760. Witnesses were: Chas. Moore, James Price and John Beatty. He married ca 1730 to Jean O (or Jane) who died in Anson Co. NC ca 1759.Their son James married Elizabeth KuykendallJames and Elizabeth had a son, James III who died 1814 in Miss. md. ca 1780 York Co. SC to Elizabeth Carroll, d/o Joseph and Mary (Kuykendall) Carroll, d/o of James and Sarah (Coburn) Kuykendall, etc.(2. "My Folks" by William Andrew Leeper of Charlotte, NC 1969.His book reflects on the Leeper and Armstrong connections, John Armstrong, Lt. Col NC (had one of the original land grants of 1751 on the South Fork of Catawba River, known today as Armstrong Ford. The pioneer house stood on the right of the road just before entered the bridge over the fork.He went to Tenn in later years. (I might mention that there are two ArmstrongFords on the Catawba River, one in Gaston Co.NC and one in York Co. SC.John was s/o James and Jean O. His wife wasMary Carroll d/o Samuel Carroll of Mecklenburg Co. NC (spelled Caryl in the will book)One thing that caught my eye was on page 55-A Mary Leeper b. Dec 14 1786 and died June 5 1836 and husband William Armstrong b. Aug 6 1778 and died Nov 5 1859.He says that Wlliam Armstrong's parents were Arthur Armstrong born 1746 (my note, died Oct 24 1828 age 82 years (Sgt of SC Colonial Wars Index) and wife Mary b. 1754 d. Nov 29 1830 age 76 years. All of these death dates for William and Mary, Arthur and Mary, I copied from the tombstones in Bethel Church Cemetary,on Highway 557 from Charlotte NC to Clover, SC. I don't know how Arthur Armstrong fits in.
I don't know how much to tell you about the Leeper Kuykendall Armstrong connections, but Robert Leeper and your James Kuykendall (there's also a Jacob Kuykendall here that sometimes is referred to as James so I'm not positive which of the two, James or Jacob was at this particular point) but they settled on the South Fork River and Catawba River. This is an area now in Gaston Co. NC.Some researchers say that after James and Sarah Kuykendall sold their land here, they moved to what is now York Co. SC.I have been to the cemetary, called the Old Smith Graveyard near Belmont in Gaston Co. where Matthew Leeper Rev. War. soldier and wife Margaret P Mariner are buried. Matthew is the son of James Leeper who married Jean Armstrong d/o Matthew and Margaret Shipley Sloan. Matthew is s/o John and Mary (Carroll) Armstrong.let me stop there as I'm sure this is all confusing to you but may save you some research time later on.Betty Kuykendall Price.
