Jacob Luursen's father?
To most of you, the following questions will mean nothing but I know there are some of you still interested in learning more about our immigrant Jacob Luyersen and his parents. So I hope that this will spur a little bit of excitement to which we can begin the new year in research.
As many of you know, I have tons of material on the Kuykendall family and it's various spellings. Some of the material I've had just in folders which I don't get a chance to read over and over. But yesterday, while doing a paper about my ancestor who I had documented as a Founder in the National Society Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America, I re-read for perhaps the 10th or 12th time since I copied it many, many years ago, some of the translated Dutch documents which have been published.
In two such documents, I've noticed one man, JAN LOURESEN. He was a witness to Jacob Luyersen's Power of Attorney to the wife of Symon Jansen Breet to collect his wages from the West India Company in Amsterday in 1647.I had wondered if he perhaps was a brother of Jacob Luyersen (Luursen, Loursen, and all other variatios of the name as different translaters had interpreted the name).I never pursued the thought.
Notice the spelling of Jan Louresen's name.Well, for the 10th or 12th time, I re-read the following document and this is the one I want you to be especially drawn to.
New York Historical Manuscripts:Dutch (Van Laer) Volume II Register of the Provincial Secretary 1642-1647:
[257]Declaration of officers of the ship "Angel Gabriel" that they had prevailed on the captain to steer for New Netherland on account of the disabled condition of the ship.
"Before me, Cornelius van Tienhoven, secretary in New Netherland appointed by the General Chartered West India Company, appeared Jacob Reynsen, pilot of the ship "The Angel Gabriel",JACOB LOURESEN, chief boatswain, Symon Claesen, gunner and Melis Pietersen, at the request of LOURENS CORNELISSEN, skipper of the above ship, "The Angel Gabriel", who jointly and severally declared, testified and attested, as they do hereby, in place and with promise of a solemn oath if need be, that they all, on the voyage from Curason to Holland, found themselves with one mast broken in two places and a leaky ship; whereupon, we the deponents, as officers, declare that we besought (the aforesaid skipper) to run to New Netherland, upon the express condition that they the deponents, and all the ship's crew would give up one month's wages. All of which they, the deponents, declare to be true and truthful, persisting in their declaration, saying that they have done this only to bear testimony to the truth.Done this day 6th September 1641 in New Netherland.
SignedJacob Reynsen, Pilot
JACOB LOUWERSEN
This is the X mark of Symon Claesan, gunner
This is the X mark of Melis Pietersen
Acknowledged before me: Cornelius van Tienhoven, Secretary"
Definition of "Boatswain" from Websters Dictionary -
Boat-swain:A warrant officer of a naval ship, or a subordinate officer of a merchantman who is in charge of the rigging, anchors, etc. and calls the crew to duty with his whistle, which is his badge.
Just like our surname "Kuykendall", it stands out no matter how it is spelled. To me, Luyersen, also stands out no matter how it is spelled.
What do you think about the above LOURENS CORNELISSEN, skipper of the ship?Isn't the skipper the same as the Captain?Would he be a merchantman employed by the West India Company and his (possible?) son Jacob Lourens also employed by them as we know he was, helping his father?
By the way, many of you know that the ship, "The Angel Gabriel" wrecked shortly before October 9 1647 in which it is believed that Jacob's brother Urbanus Luyersen lost his life along with others on the ship.
What do you think may have happened to LOURENS CORNELISSEN?
Did he also go down with the ship?He was the skipper six years earlier. Was he on the ship when his (possible?) son Urbanus went down?
QUESTION:Is Lourens, son of Cornelis, the father of Jacob, son of Luur?Comments please.
