Matthew Kuykendall, son of Peter and Mary
Thanks to Karl Hampton and Henry Bracken, Jr., I have pulled out some of my older files and thought that I would pass along to our readers, some more "food for thought".
Matthew Kuykendall born 24 Feb 1758 in Anson/Mecklenburg co. NC, died 25 Sept 1845 in Butler Co. KY.He married Jane Harden born 1768 NC died (when?) KY.
Matthew was the son of Petrus/Peter and Mary (Hampton?) Kuykendall, brother of old Abraham (1719-1812)His wife Jane was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Kuykendall) Harden.
Matthew served in the Revolutionary War and filed for a pension (Pension File No. S30518 - S indicating that he had a surviving spouse). While a resident of York District, South Carolina, he volunteered sometime in the month of June 1776 and served as a private in Captain Joseph Harden's company of Calvary, in the Cherokee Expedition ordered by the Governor of North Carolina. He volunteered at the persuasion of his "Uncle" Joseph Harden in whose company he served.
We all know that Aunts and Uncles are sibling of one's parents.Matthew's father was Peter Kuykendall, brother of old Abraham.Matthew's mother was Mary (Hampton?)probably daughter of Noah Hampton and sister of Andrew Hampton. This may or may not have been proven but it is accepted due to the name of Noah Hampton being passed down through several generations in that family.
So just how did the relationship between Matthew and his Uncle Joseph Harden come about?
As I stated, Matthew's wife Jane Harden was the daughter of Benjamin Harden II, wife's name unknown by me.
Jane Harden was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Kuykendall) Harden, Sr.John and Jane were siblings.
Elizabeth Kuykendall was the daughter of John and Rebecca (Harden) Kuykendall.Rebecca was a sister of John and Jane, they all being children of Benjamin Harden II who came to North Carolina before the Revolutionary War. (FYI, their sister Sarah Harden married Fredrick Hambright, another Revolutionary War Patriot of NC/SC. closely associated with the Kuykendall family.)
So in order for Joseph Harden to be Matthew Kuykendall's Uncle, he would have to be related through his father Peter Kuykendall inasmuch as the early Hampton family did not interemarry with the Harden family.
Matthew's father Peter was brother of Abraham.
Matthew's wife Jane was the daughter of Elizabeth Kuykendall Harden, wife of John Harden Sr.
Elizabeth Kuykendall was the daughter of John and Rebecca (Harden) Kuykendall.Rebecca, John and Jane were siblings to Joseph Harden, and Matthew could call Joseph his Uncle.
Think about thisand tell me what you think about this relationship. Is that a nephew/Uncle relationship?
If so, this should prove that John was the brother of Abraham and Peter who we have discussed recently.
( More for FYI - Peter and Mary's son Adam Kuykendall, married Margaret Harden, daughter of Captain, also found as Colonel and Major, Joseph Harden and wife Jane Gibson.)
So now we have John, Peter and Abraham as brothers (natural brothers) and if we can decide about the two James/Jacob Kuykendalls, we should have it all worked out.
Why can't we all just take the simple facts of the baptismal records of the children of Cornelius and Matthew just as they are.
Children of Matthew and Jennetje "Jane" (Westphael) Kuykendall are:(1) Symen/Simon 24 June 1716(2) Petrus/Peter 28 Jan 1719(3) Jacobus/James 21 Oct 1721 married Sarah Coburn (4) Elizabeth 16 Jan 1726 died young (5) Elizabeth 6 oct 1728 married John Harden Sr.Simon and Peter did not come to North Carolina.
Children of Cornelius and Maretje "Mary" (Westphael) Kuykendall are:(1) Leur 27 oct 1796 remained in PA (2) Margriete 7 May 1710; (3) Marretjen 22 Jun 1712; (4) Nelletjen 8 Jun 1715; (5) Johannes/John 5 Jun 1717: (6) Abraham 18 Oct 1719; (7) Jacob/James born ca 1730/1731 baptismal record not found.Came with Mary to NC ca 1753. (8) Petrus/Peter 4 July 1733.Daughters #2, 3, and 4 remained in the north as far as I know.There could be other daughters unidentified born between 1719 - 1733.
When the widow Mary Kuykendall married the widower Matthew Kuykendall, their children became brothers and sisters by marriage.
It is so simple. The only one whose baptismal record has not yet been found is Jacob, son of Mary. Why would Mary follow Matthew to NC and just bring one son?
Why can't we all agree and move on from there?
I welcome any corrections, additions and comments.
