Amber, I ran into the same situation as you have mentioned. The census that I'm still searching for is the 1850 census for Edward Butler Kuykendall who did not marry Mary Jane Miller until July 24, 1855 using the spelling "Kuykendall".
The 1860 and 1870 spelling is also Kuykendall.I suspect the spelling will be Kuykendall in 1850.
I'm hoping that he is still living at home.He would have been 32 years old and may have been married to someone else prior to 1855.
For what it's worth, there is a John Kirkendall who married 10 Jan 1799 to Anna Winterstein in Sussex Co. NJ on January 10 1799.John died 1847 near Madison, Jefferson Co.Ind. He has a large family and some spell their name "Kikendall".
On page 263/264 of Dr. G. B. Kuykendall's book this family is discussed.I cannot find a son Edward for them.
Also see Capt Samuel Kikendall Rev. War. same pages
I'm still searching 1850 census. The census taken or the transcriber has probably messed up the spelling.
