St. Gabriel Cemetery (& the crevasse)

Family legend has it that at some point in the distant past, the Mississippi River Levee was "set-back", and that many of the burial plots from St. Gabriel Cemetery (in Iberville parish, LA) were lost to the river. Can anyone shed light as to when this levee set-back might have occurred? And what might have been done to document any "lost graves"?
